Margaret Polson Murray founded IODE (formerly Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire) in 1900. She felt there was a need for an women's organization to promote patriotism, loyalty and service to others. Mrs. Murray personally sent telegrams to the Mayors of major Canadian cities, urging them to call together the women of their communities.
The first Chapter was formed in Fredericton, New Brunswick, on January 15, 1900. Primary Chapters were formed in quick succession across the country. The Head Office was established in Toronto and the federation was incorporated in 1901. ECHOES, the IODE magazine, was first published in 1902. Today, IODE has adapted itself and its Chapters respond generously to meet the changing needs of all Canadians from coast to coast to coast. |
City of Ottawa Proclaims February 8-13, 2016 - IODE Awareness Week!
On Monday, February 8th, 2016, many IODE members braved the winter weather to attend a short but special presentation at Ottawa's City Hall.
Deputy Mayor Bob Monette filled in for Mayor Jim Watson and read out the Proclamation which honoured IODE and its members for their tireless dedication to helping citizens of Ottawa who have found themselves in need over the past 110 years. The ceremony wrapped up with the raising of the IODE Corporate Standard, which flew at City Hall the entire week. Special thanks to Emerson Harkin for taking the photographs. |
